US Military Executes Deadly Attack in Pacific, Resulting in 4 Fatalities
As stated by a high-ranking military official, the American armed forces executed a fatal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, killing four individuals.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence verified the vessel was transiting along a established narco-trafficking route and was involved in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were harmed.”
Context and Prior Strikes
This announcement comes a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, pledging to escalate the military buildup.
Only on the previous day, the Pentagon stated it had conducted strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Defends Tactics Amidst Pressure
The government has encountered growing pressure to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, officials have refused to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a success, arguing it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of legal military action.
Although the administration has said the operation is about halting drugs destined for the US, comments from a senior aide appeared to confirm a wider political objective. In a recent interview, the chief of staff said the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”
This suggests the military campaign may be linked to a strategy to remove Venezuela's sitting government.
