The Showrunner Shares He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... At the Moment.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed program wrapping up—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Audience Reaction
One could easily to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and fan theories regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Has Vince Gilligan See the Ending of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” he states. “yet we stand ready to abandon a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why mess with the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
