The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
