The people of Israel observe two-year anniversary of October 7th attacks as Palestinian peace talks advance
Citizens have assembled across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"The bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed state remembrance events until mid-October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of people who died in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected around the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams met in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the plan.
A high-ranking Palestinian official involved in the negotiations revealed that an night meeting of indirect talks started at 7 PM local time.
The official stated the morning session finished without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.
He added that the negotiations are "tough and have not yet produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to close the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Critical Points in Negotiations
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The trade of the hostages still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies provision
- Post-war management of the territory
Citizen Sentiment
In the city's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere seems like home now and until every captive are released no one will have peace of mind."
"After we see everybody home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can start to rebuild," she added.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people gathered to express their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be alive.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the hostages to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be protected."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that approximately seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to end in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.
Palestinian Situation
At the site of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to remember the victims.
From there, the boom of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli shelling carried on.
In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the western district, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the camp to the northwest.
"As the night arrives, the dread comes with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.
"My family are afraid of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, notably my smallest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
The medical facility in Gaza City said it had taken in the remains of half dozen people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the south region of Khan Younis indicated additional fatalities had been transported. One of them was lost his life by Israeli troops while seeking aid to the southern area, medics said.
