The network's Top New Show of 2025 Gets a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
