The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes depict the main character exploring a desolate church.
A World of Individual Horror
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The core gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
