The Blue Jays Secure Fall Classic Matchup Versus the Dodgers
George Springer was instrumental for the Houston Astros claiming the World Series in 2017.
Toronto's Blue Jays advanced to their maiden Fall Classic following the 1993 season by overcoming the Mariners in the final seventh game of the American League Championship Series.
Trailing three runs to one, outfielder George Springer delivered a three-run blast in the seventh, leading the only Canadian franchise in Major League Baseball to a 4-3 victory in the best-of-seven series. They will now face the defending champions, holders of the defending champions, in the anticipated championship.
"I'm thrilled for our team, Toronto, the nation," said Springer, a key player of the Houston Astros team that won the 2017 championship. "What an unbelievable moment."
Springer has now connected for 23 total post-season home runs, placing him third on the list trailing only Manny Ramirez (29) and Jose Altuve (27).
"There's probably not anyone else on planet Earth that I want up in that spot except for Springer with his October magic," noted manager John Schneider.
Seattle's team, who had led the series 2-0 and 3-2, are still the only MLB franchise never to appear in a World Series.
Manager Dan Wilson stated "without a doubt that it's going to sting" after his club's elimination at their home ballpark, but praised their efforts this season.
"They're an exceptional squad. Unfortunately that we ended up on the unsuccessful side of the series," he continued.
Toronto secured the title on their two prior appearances in the early 90s, and will welcome the Los Angeles in game one on Friday.
