Senegal's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.
As I walk into the room, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout our chat. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and raw talent convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his career in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the academy. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.
A Landmark Year and European Breakthrough
That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to the title and earning best player.
A month later, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his family encourage to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from set pieces are notable assets. He admits a need to control his aggression, having been sent off early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.
Monaco, Mentors and Future Ambitions
With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.
Right now, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
