Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this Tuesday, reacting to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
The quarterback's remarks pointed to the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the Saints.
During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering aggressive tackles on opponents. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the NFL for one season.
What Sparked the Recent Dispute
Wilson's reaction came after Payton made remarks following the Broncos' historic 33-32 win over the Giants. Payton suggested that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" the coach commented.
Context of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- The quarterback was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245M contract.
- The Broncos finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year prior to the team brought in Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
- Payton benched Wilson late into the 2023 season, a decision that ensured the player from suffering an injury.
If Wilson remained on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious breakup between the player and his coach.
