Rob Edwards along with Gary O'Neil represent the initial names in the frame to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend after the team's ten-game without a victory beginning to the top-flight season.
And both candidates - both of who have historic associations to the club - are part of the options to be evaluated by the club ownership.
Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a possible hurdle to his hiring at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton Town manager - who played more than 100 of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a leading candidate for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is said to have support from the Wolves board as they start the search of appointing a new manager.
O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise candidate, even though he would be a surprising appointment considering he was released by the club in December last year.
The former West Ham player is out of work which means the club would not be required to pay any buyout fee.
