NY Introduces Reporting Tool for Residents to Share Immigration Footage After Detentions of 4 US Citizens
New York state attorney general has introduced a recent digital platform urging locals to provide images and footage of ICE operations throughout the state. This action follows a shortly after a significant enforcement action disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking mass protests.
American Citizens Arrested In Raid
A congressional representative disclosed during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were detained and kept for "nearly 24 hours" after the previous day's operation. Protests occurred in NYC on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"All New York residents has the right to live without fear," the AG wrote in a announcement.
"If you witnessed and documented ICE activity recently, I ask you to submit that footage with the authorities. We are pledged to examining these accounts and evaluating any wrongdoings."
Submission Process
The form provides spaces to submit visual evidence of the raid, along with a field to specify where it occurred. When submitting, individuals must check a checkbox that confirms that "the attorney general may use any materials, images, or footage in a official report, including in a lawsuit or official statement."
Information about the Chinatown Raid
The enforcement action, which witnesses say involved dozens of ICE personnel, occurred in a popular district of Manhattan where fake handbags, accessories, jewelry and merchandise are sold daily en masse – frequently to tourists.
Recordings of the operation show several masked and armed federal agents zip-tying and detaining a person, and forcing aside bystanders. Crowds of locals followed the agents through the streets. An armored truck was also seen moving along the urban roads.
Political Response
During a Wednesday press conference held with the immigrant advocacy group, Representative Goldman, a lawmaker, said that four nationals were detained by ICE for about 24 hours and that there were "no situations where nationals should be taken for no reason." He clarified the individuals were let go on Wednesday with no legal action taken.
"The goal is evident here. It is not to take criminals off the street," the congressman stated. "This represents a armed campaign to create conflict. It is merely a excuse to incite violence for the government to deploy the armed forces to prevent violence that they themselves caused."
Widespread Condemnation
Fury over the federal action escalated – every NYC mayor hopefuls condemned the operation, as did NY's governor.
"Once again, the current administration selects oppressive displays that generate terror, not safety. It must stop," a contender declared.
NYC community groups voiced concern too.
"ICE descended on the neighborhood with tactical trucks, hooded officers and riot gear to focus on small merchants trying to make a living. This raid had nothing to do with community security and focused completely on intimidating residents and neighborhoods," remarked the leader of a major immigrant coalition.
ICE Policies
ICE policy bans the detention of US citizens and the bureau has stated it will not arrest or detain American nationals. Yet, independent reporting has revealed that more than 170 US citizens have been detained unlawfully by ICE during the period of the existing leadership.
Recent Pattern
Immigration operations have been becoming more common in New York and nationwide recently.
A recent action in midtown Manhattan was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the present government. Rallies targeting federal operations are widespread along with claims of aggression and cruel conditions.
Recently, a document provided by advocacy organizations claimed healthcare failures of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
