Line of Duty Confirmed for Seventh Series on BBC
The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.
An upcoming six-episode season created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."
The previous series concluded in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but official word only came recently.
New Challenges for The Team
Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."
Fresh Face and Complex Case
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.
Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, plot details hinted.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had so many fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."
He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Cast Reactions
The Scottish actor called being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.
Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."
"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."
Series Legacy
Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.
Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will premiere.
The finale of series six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
