The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
