Child of Ex- South African President Jacob G Zuma Rejects Terror-Related Charges as Legal Proceedings Commences
The daughter of former South African Head of State Jacob Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror allegations at the beginning of her legal proceedings in the harbor city of Durban city.
The defendant, forty-three, is being charged over remarks she made on digital networks several years back during deadly unrest in South Africa that came after the detention of her parent.
A week of chaos in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including plundering and arson, left at least 300 individuals deceased and led to damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (£2.2bn).
The defendant has been accused of inciting this turmoil and confronts charges of incitement to commit terror-related activities and civil unrest.
Background of the Proceedings
The demonstrations were centered in the areas of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal province and came after the ex-leader's arrest for ignoring a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an investigation into allegations of impropriety while he was holding office.
The defendant has always rejected the accusations against her, with her attorney previously labelling the state's legal argument as unsubstantiated.
She has also frequently claimed the charges against her were an attempt to settle political grievances with her father after he started his own political organization and ran against the African National Congress.
Backing and Court Representation
This was reinforced by the Zuma foundation, which stated the proceedings was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and kinship persecution" against the previous head of state and his family.
A small number of supporters from her party, her party, turned up outside the provincial high court, while her dad and other group representatives were present at the court sessions inside.
The defendant's representatives has stated that the evidence presented by prosecutors is inadequate and lacks concrete grounds for a conviction.
